Hi everyone

I will be traveling to LA in April with my mother. We decided to rent a convertible for our trip, since we have always wanted to rent one and thought that this would be the perfect oppurtunity to do so. Anyway, we haven't gotten a hotel yet, but we will likely be staying at the Roosevelt in Hollywood, the Hyatt in West Hollywood, or the Westwood in Brentwood. I've heard a lot about crime in LA and I was wondering whether it is safe for tourists to rent a convertible. If we get lost in Hollywood, could we get lost in seedy or dangerous places? Is Compton in the area? Overall (final verdict): Should we cancel the convertible for a less flashy car? Thanks for your help.

This is Los Angeles. Home to some of the nicest cars in the world. Just be cautious where you park as you would with any car.

Compton is about 25 minutes from Hollywood.

The convertable was made for California weather! April should be beautiful and you don't have to worry about any part of Hollywood! Touristy places are pretty safe and Compton isn't on the tourist maps as far as I know!

i suggest the roosevelt!!! pretty central location and they also have an exclusive pool side party on the weekends. as for a convertible, these cars are not that flashy. they are common in LA. and compton is FAR FAR FAR from hollywood. you better worry about inadvertently venturing into east hollywood, echo or silver lake. while these areas are being gentrified, they are still a bit dodgy. enjoy LA!

You only will have the probability of get lost in Compton in you decide visit the South Bay area and you take the wrong exit of long beach highway, better avoid even crossing all southcentral LA, if you want a trip to South Bay, Peninsula or Newport or Disney better go following the coastline from Santa Monica or Culver City down the Bay through Marina del Rey, avoid Inglewood crossing so better surface by Lincoln to Playa del Rey leaving LAX on your left, then to Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Redondo and Palos Verdes, is a very petty trip through californian way of living in the core of Los Angeles coastline. If you take the 405 is good but you will be in a jump and you are probably to get lost in one of no very good areas of Inglewood, Lennox, Hawthorne, Lawndale or even if you are very confused with the LA highway system signs you can also "land" in Carson or Norh Log Beach, both not really good places to be in a convertible.

If you're in Hollywood, you'd have to get really lost to make it into Compton. Plus, you'd realize you were there. Plenty of people drive around in convertibles...you'll be fine.

Assuming no freeway traffic, which is not a good assumption in L.A. Considering how traffic usually is, it's much farther.

Silver Lake's not dodgy at all. Echo Park still has a few dodgy areas south of Sunset (esp. around the park itself), but staying on Sunset you won't encounter them.
