I live in Hollywood (next to Yucca Corridor) and the remnants of this old thread still hold true.

Just don't sign a lease without visiting first. Hollywood has some sh*tty apartments in great areas, as well as great apartments in sh*tty areas.

I'd classify Central LA as those neighborhoods within a 5 mile radius of Downtown LA and there are so many to speak of.....Silver Lake, Echo Park, Angelino Heights, Pico-Union, MacArthur Park, Mount Washington, Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, Thai Town, Little Armenia, Los Feliz, and the USC neighborhood, etc. If you're looking for a completely urban experience, there's always Downtown LA, if you can afford the rent. Personally, I like Silver Lake and Los Feliz. Both neighborhoods are relatively safe. A few years ago FORBES Magazine put Silver Lake at the top of their list of America's Best Hipster Neighborhoods.

As for Hollywood, it's pretty urban too, with lots of apartments dwellers, especially near the Hollywood/Highland Center, which is full of tourist year round. The crime in that area seems to be related to the club scene along Hollywood Blvd. And the Red line subway runs through the heart of Hollywood connecting it with downtown LA.
