Louisville is the best city I have ever lived in and I am so happy that I moved here from Chicago 5 years ago. More locally owned restaurants than any city in America outside of New York. An amazing arts program(Opera, ballet, orchestra and performing arts). One of the best parks systems in the United States. Low crime. Beautiful architecture. Friendly people and a low cost of living.
EVERY city in America has there rednecks, thugs and just plain morons. Try living in Chicago and not encountering idiots on every corner.
There is a reason why I moved to the Highlands and there is a reason why 30 others that I know moved here from Chicago.
If you want the same boring cliched city like every other city in America, you might want to pick another city city. If you like unique cities with great independant restaurants, arts etc... then Louisville is an amazing place to raise a family!

N. Olikee - You obviously do not live in Louisville if you think Indy is a better place to live than Louisville.

Visvaldis - The suburbs of Louisville may be conservative but the city of Louisville is liberal. President Obama received more votes in Louisville , by a wide margin, over John McCain. You need to find a part of the city that fits your needs better. If you lived in the northern suburbs of Chicago, you could make the same argument about conservative christians.
Well stated. Louisville really is a well hidden gem

That's great! Restaurants and restaurants and restaurants. Plenty of variety (and locally owned too!) for the belly. Yum-yum! Louisville is great place for those who value their stomachs!
As the old saying goes, man does not live from bread alone.

You didn't do too well on your reading-comprehension scores in school, did you?

Yes, good wholesome family entertainment (ballet, theater, etc.) in Louisville. Everybody can enjoy and go home wearing a big smile. I think the orchestra recently ran out of money. But we mustn't forget Southeast Christian's dazzling Easter spectacle.
And yes, the "vibrant' arts scene! Maybe someone should check the pulse of the 'vibrant' arts scene. It's so 'vibrant' that it doesn't receive any coverage in LEO or the Courier-Journal. Louisvillians believe the St James Art Fair is about art.
Louisville's rosey red glass wearers apply adjectives; 'good', 'vibrant', 'excellent'. etc., etc.
I agree that for some people Louisville is a gem. Especially at this time of year. With college basketball and the NBA, one could not ask for more in life.
Van Halen is coming to town soon. Got your tickets yet? Who knows, maybe even more hair bands will give concerts in Louisville.

I'm not a Louisville proponent (obviously), and I would concede that Cincinnati blows Louisville out of the water when it comes to arts, but isn't the St. James Court Art Fair really about art?

Don't knock Van Halen. I'm not a lover, but that is a big name. The Rolling Stones did come to Churchill Downs like 6-7 years ago, probably the biggest name to come through there in a long time. So, no, Louisville's not all hair bands and their fans...just Louisville west of Bardstown Road and south of the Watterson.

van halen are a bunch of washed up old men. i saw a photo of eddie and he looks like the crypt keepers older brother. everybody is acting like we r special because they are opening the tour here. how do you think the first show of a band that hasn't played together in a decade or so is gonna sound? yeah, we're special enough to be the "tune up" show before the real tour begins. there is a pretty good chance that dave and eddie might get pissed and fight each other on stage, so if your looking for that jerry springer/sigfried and roy/train wreck that's fun to watch, this might not be a bad show.

I've lived away from Louisville for a long time, but what I remember most are the many, many dreary, rainy, darkish days of winter there. UGH! Spring & summer allergies--I took allergy shots for 8 years. Humidity and heat high. Ohio Valley inversions for days. I'd look elsewhere!

Everything pretty much East of 65 all the way out to Gene Snyder are great areas IMO, and those Highlands, Crescent Hill, St Matthews areas are some of the coolest neighborhoods in the entire state

Someone said Louisville wasn't progressive? Isn't one of the mottos "Keep Louisivlle Weird"? Ever been down Bardstown Rd???

I love it here. I grew up in a smaller town in Kentucky then lived in Nashville for awhile and recently spent 10 years living in the Chicago area where my wife is from. We moved down here about a year ago and really enjoy it.

That being said, there are some jacked up areas but it's like that anywhere with a population of half a million+. Out Preston Hwy, Dixie Hwy, are pretty trashy. Like I said, if you want to live in a good areas stay east of I65 and if possible stay along I64
