Does anyone know a rather safe area to live near Fort Meade? I am single and do not have a car, so I will be taking public transportation. My budget is $1000/month

The first thing to do is determine whether there *is* public transit to your location in Ft. Meade. There were some recent discussions here:

All you can do is plot locations near train stops and look for apartments within walking distance or served by another local bus. Greenbelt and College Park are moderately safe options served by DC Metro buses. I would plan to buy a car as soon as possible, as it sounds difficult however you do it.

Need safe & commuter-friendly neighborhood near Ft. Meade
Thanks for your help. I know there is a shuttle from Greenbelt that goes to Ft. Meade so I am looking at apartments there; any suggestions?

I've looked at the ApartmentGuide, and there are only a couple in your budget. I know there are some nice places north of Rte 193 (Greenbelt Road). Since some of these are condos (eg the Greenbrier), I would check Craigslist for a rent from the owner. Here are more apartment references from the city of Greenbelt:

If you don't find the right place in Greenbelt, I would try along Route 198 in Laurel.
