What about Maryland's African (American) population?! I guess to you, we've never existed!

The places that seem Baptist culturally are Methodist because our state was an early hotbed for this religion and it has stuck. There are certainly Baptists around, they are in the minority compared to the other two though.

No clue why someone would consider it a southern state. I like to refer to my state as a mid atlantic state.

I partially agree with you...
Maryland is also blue because
1) Most people live in Baltimore/Baltimore Co, Montgomery and PG counties and are thus urban/inner suburban

2) High education rates make whiter counties Montgomery and Howard blue (AA barely usually manages to go red and Baltimore County would definitely be less blue if it wasn't nearly 30% black.

On the eastern shore, Kent County is surprisingly democratic (can someone explain this??) but the largest number of votes manage to be for Republicans like in AA County. Somerset county goes close to being blue in elections because it is more than 40% black.

We also have to remember that as recently as 2000 the eastern shore counties and suburban MD had similar black population percentages.

Default Update

So I had the pleasure of visiting Maryland this past month, and I must say, I noticed quite a few things (architectural styles, accents, food) that struck me as Southern, at least in Anne Arundel Prince George's county- though significantly less so in AA. So I admit that Maryland is perhaps not as Yankee as I had previously thought.
I stand by my original statement with regard to Baltimore and Frederick. These cities are undoubtedly part of the northeast, particularly Baltimore and I invite anyone who says otherwise to come down here to Tennessee, or even Virginia below the Rappahannock and THEN try to say "Baltimore is Southern".

Interestingly enough, Baltimore hasn't experienced a dramatic cultural shift like some other cities but was widely considered Southern as recently as maybe the 70's or so.

I don't think Maryland is a southern state anymore. That being said it still has southern tendencies especially dealing with race. EG. visiting Bowie State student stabbed to death on College Park campus, and taunting in Darlington being investigated as possible hate crime, confederate flags, etc.

Just in general. That was around the time public sentiment seemed to started noticeably shifting over Baltimore's (and DC's) regional identity from what I gather.
