Try this link. http://www.mdpennysaver.com/categorysearchresults.cfm (broken link). You can definitely find rentals for below $1000. You might have to kick in a few bucks for utilities. Laurel is a good place to look at. Many of the small, older apartment complexes are affordable (the ones privately owned, not managed by large companies). Just stay away from some of the larger complexes.

I work in Jessup (right outside of Ft Meade) - the zipcode is 20794 - do a search by zipcode

I would try savage...if you check craigslist there are numerous small places for rent around the historic area and also historic route 1 laurel. Right now I share a townhome with a roomate and we split it at $875 each.

So if you can find a roomate you could rent an entire townhome in the bowling brook townhome area. Many of my neighbors work in Ft. Mead. You could also share a 2 bedroom apartment around there too.

Please do not be fooled. The area around ft.meade is thriving. I currently live in a newly constructed home in hanover (about 5 mins away from the base). The area is beautiful and convenient. You may want to hurry because the prices of apartments are on the rise in Hanover. Good luck!

Check out Odenton. I lived there for a few years. Tons of condos and townhouses for rent at reasonable prices. Not far from Ft. Meade either

Hanover has new high rise apartments, but I'm not sure what the rates are.

We went for a visit back to that area a couple of years ago. I recommend Glen Burnie, where I lived for a number of years, or Pasadena, Maryland, not too far away. But affordability if very hard to find in Maryland.

Just a word of caution. We were able to stay on base while visiting someone stationed at Fort Meade. But the main strip in front of Fort Meade is downright scary. I couldn't believe how much it's changed.

Good luck.
