Okay, the final three regions:

1) Salem including small affordable places in Swampscott, Lynn Diamond District, Marblehead

2) Watertown including Waltham and a miracle in Lexington

3) West Roxbury/Norwood/Walpole/Dedham (Oakdale)/Jamaica Plain/Canton?

4) Medford, might be saved to the list, but I am starting to consider that my main social scene would be the post-college Davis Square hipster crowd, so starting to fade.

Probably, good to have more than one choice given the costs of renting and buying and lack of supply.

More updates to come.

Arlington or Concord? Maybe you could luck out and find something suitable. Taking commuter rail into Porter from Concord is OK. Also, in Arlington you get many amenities, lot more adult crowd, easy to everything you might need (they have TJ and just opened new Whole Foods on Mass Ave so no screwing with traffic on Fresh Pond Plaza). East Arlington has lot more rentals/two-family/condos and is generally little less popular with families because of closeness to Alewife.
Good luck!

Melrose is a nice mix between city and town. The end of the Orange Line ends at the edge of Melrose/Malden so you can walk from almost anywhere in Melrose to Boston's subway system. There are a few busses (131,136/137) that you could take if you live at the most North/farthest from the T
Nice downtown with resturants, local shopping and the Hospital is close. Kids can walk to school, when i lived there as a kid there were 7 different elementary schools so no matter where you live, a kid has no more than 3/4 mile walk to school. I think theres only 5 now. Its a safe area. I dont know for sure but it seems like Melrose has a lot of young familys and elderly people and less in between. Also, Melrose has a new track, baseball field, soccer field and football stadium.
IMO Melrose is a great little CITY with all the convienence of living in a bigger city. No danger, walkable and 7 miles North of Boston.
One thing that isn't so great about Melrose is there are no liquor stores (but wakefield and Malden pick up their customers by having packies right across the city limits of Melrose)

There are liquor stores in Melrose now - although classier ones that also sell high end foods. A really nice one in the center of Melrose is Beacon Hill Wine and Gourmet.

Beacon Hill Wine & Spirits...hard to find wines, spirits, champange and ice cold beer...
