My boyfriend and I just bought a house in Clinton. So does that right there answer that question and thus crush my dreams of ever being employed, especially in Boston unless I want to enjoy a long grueling hellish daily commute? My career is in software support/development and my previous place of employment was out near CT, but my boyfriend landed a great job out here so here we are. I don't know if there's anything out here in central MA, I feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere. But then again, I'm still not familiar with what's out here. I've been on CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, Monster, Dice and Indeed, and most software companies seem to be in Boston. Please could someone offer me ANY advice? Is the commute to Boston really THAT bad?! I don't want to be unemployed for the rest of my life if I don't exactly want to bag groceries for a living. I'm actually at a point where I might be forced to go back to school and consider a complete career change, just because of where I live, but I hope I'm wrong. Please help!

I've already applied there, three times actually, I never hear back from them so I've given up on MathWorks. The companies I do hear from are all in Boston.

Consider new place to live if you don't want a long commute, but only have job opportunities in Boston.

There was a reason why the place in Clinton was so cheap, you know.

Some major insurers, hospitals and colleges are located in Worcester. Worth finding out if you are a match for anything they have open.

Good point. I would check Hanover insurance.

That's funny, I have a friend who's in the same field as you and he lives inside 128. The only jobs he can find are out on 495 in Acton, etc. Do you have a B.S. in computer science? A 4-year degree is almost a prerequesite to getting an interview in the Boston area, especially the entry-level $60-70k jobs in software development.

Thanks, I'll try to give Worcester some more research and check into those suggestions. I mostly need to work for a software company though, and if clientele need software support, that's what I do.

Not an option. We bought a house we can afford, AND one that we love, as well as being closer to family in Worcester, Hudson and Marlboro. Besides, we JUST bought a house. Not going to turn around and flip it now. So, like I said, not an option.

He's looking out in Boston too? I have a B.A. so not in computer science. I have the work experience to back me though.

.... What I really want to know is if a commute into Boston is really that terrible? I've researched a lot of threads on here, and I keep finding mixed answers. I'm thinking I could take a commuter rail in, either from Worcester or from Acton, then bus or T.
