No. As of 12/15/16, one can purchase, possess, and use up to 1 oz. of marijuana. You can also cultivate up to 12 plants for personal use. But no licenses allowing sale will be available until 1/1/2018. So legally you cannot buy marijuana in the state until those licenses are issued and retail stores are allowed to open.

I love how laws work. I can have it, but I can't buy it.

Are you sure? The article I saw in the Globe said 6 plants.

Setting up a retail program and all the regulations around it is not going to happen overnight. So, you can grow your own (not sure where you would get seeds legally since again no retail) or if you happen to by on the black market (illegal of course) you won't be arrested or even ticketed so long as the amount you have doesn't exceed the limits in the law.

I get that, it's just an odd quirk of laws. I don't understand why they don't make both concurrent. Sales begin 1/1/18, legality begins 1/1/18. Gives them time to create a regulatory framework for implementation.

I think you can start growing in Dec of this year. Get some seeds and give it a shot.

Based on the treasurer's press conference yesterday, they've already laid some of the groundwork down in terms of planning. Still need time to get the framework setup though.

I have no desire to smoke, really. I used to in my 20s, but glad that part of life is in my past.

It is. People with partners/roommates are projecting, as it's 12 cap per household (I believe).

This Globe article said 12 and I must have ignored the "per household" part.

Blame big weed - they wrote the proposal. They understand that it takes cities and states time to setup the regulatory infrastructure needed. But they also want individuals to start cultivating on their own as soon as possible.

One of the biggest corporate interests in legalizing marijuana is Scotts Miracle-Gro. In the past few years they have invested heavily in hydroponic equipment manufacturers, grow light companies, and a specialty soil maker and put it under a subsidiary called Hawthorne Gardening. The soil - Black Magic - sells for twice what their normal potting soil does and is already available in Home Depot stores where pot is legal. For S-MG, legal weed in MA means the potential of about $400 in retail business for one to initially start growing at home.

Guess there's a downside to everything. I had never heard of Big Weed. Big Oil, Big Pharm but Big Weed? I voted yes but I'm not happy to be supporting chemical fertilizers and big rich corporations. Tip--just make your own soil by digging some from the yard, saving your vegetable peelings, mixing it all up in a small kitchen composter and like magic! You'll have your own soil and it'll be better than any miracle grow could ever be. (I recently ordered a nice little kitchen composter on ebay for $20--locking, hinged lid, sturdy handle, very convenient. I always make my own fertilizer for my outside flowers and vegetables--easy.)
