I do, the son of a friend of mine.

Just because you haven't known anyone doesn't make it not real. I, personally, have known five. But, you are doing what I keep saying NOT to do: using anecdote instead of facts. I will look for numbers (though you could, too) and post them.

I know several people who have relatives who ODed. I've watched junkies shoot up in Harvard Square in broad daylight and also watched people nod off on the Red Line more times than I can count.

Really? You don't think something is real unless you have personally witnessed it first hand? I don't know anyone personally who died from a drug overdose, but I read about it every single day -- it's mentioned somehow, somewhere, related to numerous other news stories. And there are several excellent books about it.

Generally no. I know I am not going to personally witness everything going on in the world. The way the media portrays this opioid phenomenon makes it sound like it is going on everywhere. Admittedly I maintain a fairly small and efficient social circle but after more than 40 years of being around I am still surprised I have not had a firsthand encounter with this phenomenon.

The opioids crisis is very real and it's happening anywhere. Several
teens from Andover have died because of it. Absolutely terrible having to hear these stories

It's all fake news. Numbers and facts don't matter. Remember?

Honestly the number of deaths for 2016, the highest thus far is still way lower than I would have guessed based on the attention the issue is receiving. 2016 opioid related deaths versus the most recent state population figures I could find that weren't estimates, is only .03% which is less than one tenth of a percent.
