Flash mobs of shoplifters frequently targeted Macy's at the Westgate Mall.

A "Flash mob of shoplifters" is when large groups of dozens of shoplifters will enter a Retail store and go on a shoplifting frenzy, knowing the odds 1--3 of the shoplifters in the mob will be caught by store security however, dozens of others will get away with hundreds, thousands of dollar worth of merchandise.

Macy's in Brockton suffered many flash mobs of shoplifters incidents. Jordan Marsh, the predecessor before Macy's at Westgate Mall, also suffered from flash mobs of shoplifters.

Here is an example of flash mob of shoplifters in a Massachusetts store:

The Taunton store is also closing. They are closing 60 stores nationwide. Sears/Kmart is closing more as well. Times are tough for retail in general.

Macy's to close Brockton, Taunton stores, cut 10,000 jobs - News - telegram.com - Worcester, MA

What is going to be left at Silver City anymore? That mall must be close to done. IMHO that place was sketchier than Westgate for a long time.

Department stores are dying and getting replaced by smaller outlets, discount big box stores (ex target, Walmart, Marshalls) and online shopping.

Maybe customers are finally figuring out that the 75% off limited time (every week) sales are rubbish and that the same stuff can be found cheaper elsewhere.

I wish a flash mob would hit the eastfield mall in Springfield and put it out of it misery. Probably not work the risk because all that is left is Sears.

That will leave it with Dick's, Round 1, and Sears operating in the anchor spots. JC Penney and Macy's will be vacant, and my guess is Sears will be vacant soon too. That's 3/4 anchor spaces (Dicks/Round 1 are on the top/bottom floors of one spot on the South side of the building thus combining for one anchor spot). There's also the movie theater which is nice after the redesign.

I don't know what's going to happen there. It's so dead already- even with Macy's and Sears still occupying space. BCC uses some space- maybe they'll expand. But there is Target, Kohls, Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. right nearby so I don't know whats not already in the area that could fill the space? Silver City has had 2 vacant full-service restaurant spaces for close to a decade (if not more) and other stores aren't doing well (Best Buy). It's a ghost town. It may be beyond help at this point.

I think the ownership group feels the casino next door will help. I doubt it. I thought the mall could benefit from the casino being built on-site (literally connected), but I don't know if just being near it will help. I think it's dead.

The only surprise for me is that Swansea isn't going. I'm shocked. You have Dartmouth and Providence nearby in either direction. Brockton and Taunton closing means no Macy's along the 24 corridor anymore (though Dartmouth and S. Shore are close to being bookends) and 3 remain along the 195 corridor.

I can't believe that Macy's at the Swansea Mall is still open. I guess there's no shoplifting because nobody ever goes to that mall.

Well the Globe has a list of Sears stores that are closing. Swansea is the only one listed in MA. My guess is that list will grow.

The Sears in Woonsocket, RI is closing (the back of the building is the state line) as is the Kmart in South Attleboro.

There's rumors of other things for it. Sears will most likely go under but it's a gradual closing. I think JC Penny will be the next major chain and then maybe Kohl's. Kohl's is great but they give way..way too many things away for free.
