Just tired of listening to people complain about how much everything sucks here. And yes a lot of people left this year:

I'm not seeing where people are saying Massachusetts in particular sucks. In fact, I'd guess that many of us continue to live here because we think we are continuing to do "it" (whether "it" be education, healthcare, opportunities, culture, etc) better than other parts of the country.

We are all victims of a disastrous federal response to the pandemic. I'd rather deal with that in Massachusetts than in a state like my home state of Georgia.

What on earth are you reading, and why are you posting this in the COVID thread? What does this have to do with anything?

It was data from one moving company.

What do you mean what on earth am I reading? I think we all knew lots of people moved this year anyways because of remote work. It has a lot to do with COVID, lol.

It's also pretty clear from the data that these moves are largely fueled by retirees cashing out of 30+ years of RE equity gain and downsizing to a lower COL area.

Home prices are still elevated, suggesting demand remains.

It's also middle class centered on ~$75k that is totally priced out of the real estate market. If your choice is between an unsafe town with a lousy school system, an impossible commute, or moving to a place with lower housing costs, you start applying for jobs even if they're a pay cut.

Yeah, I've seen this play out real time with peers. An RN can relocate to a sunbelt metro and maintain a higher standard of living. TX has been particular favorite in my sphere as even with Austin's rapidly rising COL, an MA transplant can buy a 3bd/2ba on the fringe of the city proper for Billerica money.

I had a few do NC and FL. The FL ones mostly moved back to New England when their kids became school aged though. The ones to NC have loved it.

Can you blame them? Home prices are crazy right now. People are getting $600k+ for mid-century ranches that haven't been updated since the 80's and need some work. How could you not take that opportunity to leave MA and set yourself up with a nice condo/townhouse in a great community for half of your selling price here.

I'd like to do that myself when I get to my 60's. Problem is I haven't decided where to go. There's a reason why houses are cheaper elsewhere...

The housing here is pretty ridiculous. I love where I live but the house next to us was priced at 999k and I was shocked. I thought it would have gone for like 850k. On top of that it sold for 1.1million. It's a 4 bedroom colonial, nice but if I had a million dollars it's not what I would want. People around here have a lot of money.
