I'm reasonably excited about Maye. He's a little raw, and I don't have a ton of confidence in the team's ability coach a rookie QB. But he's impressive physically. He's the anti-Mac.

Just saw some clips of him speaking after the draft. Struck me as having a bit of an ego. It's one thing for others to compare him to Josh Allen, but he himself shouldn't!

Agreed. Even most of his detractors acknowledge that his physical gifts are great, so he seems to have a lot of potential upside. Also agree that it remains to be seen if the NE coaches have the right stuff to develop him from a rough gem into a diamond, and if they have the will and skills to surround him with a strong supporting cast of players on offense. But, this is a rebooted Patriots team in many, many ways, so I start out cautiously optimistic, and I don't expect much in the first year. Just move the team in a positive direction, that's all I ask - make progress.

Patriots took wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk in the second round - 6ft1in, 203lb and runs a 4.5 40-yard dash; and then offensive tackle Caedan Wallace in the third round - 6ft5in, 314lb and runs a 5.1 40-yard dash.

Okay, the draft is always something of a crap-shoot, but at least they are trying to prioritize filling the biggest deficits in the early rounds, which is something they didn't even attempt to do last year.

You could tell he was a little nervous. He's just a big kid, and this is his first moment in the big leagues. He should get more confident as he gets experience at the press podium.

So the Pats first 5 picks were a QB, two wide receivers and two offensive linemen. Of course they'll still be criticized, but they are using their early picks where the team had their biggest weaknesses, so I can't fault them anyway.

The latest drafts, both in the 4th round are guard Layden Robinson, 6ft3in, 302lb and wide receiver Javon Baker, 6ft1, 202lb with 4.5sec speed in the 40 yard dash.

Both wide receivers taken so far have good size and are supposed to compete scrappily for the ball on contested catches.

Another hype video on Drake Maye - this one from the Patriots website.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8eKJTM8cKs

The consensus on Maye seems to be -

Positives: great size and athleticism, strong arm - able to make any throw, good runner outside of the pocket - either to run for yardage or make some pretty amazing improvizational pass plays (like throwing it left handed for a TD while he's in the grasp of a pass-rushed on his right side).

Negatives: needs to improve his footwork discipline and gain more consistency in his accuracy, not take so many chances, show more patience in the pocket and not rely so often on his running ability.

So he has some development things to work on, but he has a very high ceiling.
