I was born in Brockton.
Family moved to Avon when I was 4 years old.
Spent most of my teens and early adulthood in Brockton where most of my friends lived.
I remember it as a great place to live ,work, and socialize.
Now from what I read it is nothing like I remember.
I know nothing last forever, but something happened to Brockton.
What happened?

How did it turn from a desirable community to what people are saying about it now?
There has to be a reason for it's demise.
Was it city/ state government that ran afoul of the citizens of Brockton?
Was the city overtaken by a less desirable citizenry?
Social decay does not happen overnight, something happened to turn this once desirable city into what is being portrayed as a less than desirable place to live.

Someone, or something has to be responsible for what has happened to Brockton.
It didn't just happen on it's own.
Can some of you Massachusetts people enlighten me as to what happened to Brockton?
Thanks.
Shoe flight, then White flight. Not complicated stuff. My father grew up in Brockton on the same street as the Bomber. His parents remained on the West Side until their house started getting broken into. The Fairgrounds area was very nice in its day and I remember it fondly. I may be in the minority, but I think we should have protected our manufacturing industries zealously. In my opinion, many of our woes today stem from the "global economy" bill of goods we were sold. Really an argument for another time though.

At 2 am, with roudy young folks intoxicated with drugs and drinks being loud etc etc etc? Another Brockton Police nightmare in the making every weekend.... I think that scenario would be the last thing Brockton needs because it will just bring even more bad press to a city with already a bad reputation. So yes, this is a good thing for Brockton.
Brockton already has nightclubs Morabeza, the Spot, and Tamboo. They're never really violent. Brockton also doesn't really need more nightclubs, but one wouldn't hurt. Brockton is well served by Providence Randolph and Boston.

Crime in Brockton is overhyped as it is not the city it was 10 years ago when the violence was palpable and frequent.

This club is probably being made to help replace Vincent's which is closing. I would argue that the decor looks very similar.

In terms of what happened to Brockton is a number of factors. They tend to spread things a bit too thin. For example they've got three rail stops when they really need just one. The transit authority made it easier from people to go to the downtown to the mall and as a result them all did pretty well in the downtown died off. They have not invested enough money in their parks department and they could have a crown jewel but they just didn't fund it. Brockton is surrounded by much more affluent suburbs that frankly do not always go to Brockton. No one on the South Shore says they live in the Brockton metro area. Shoe factories gradually closed and if they couldn't find a job they ended up on assistance programs and then you had generational Poverty.

Adding into this Brockton at one point did have a city manager but got rid of it long ago. The place can tend to be pretty political. They've had some very close mayor races that were probably decided by less than 100 votes.

Brockton benefits at least now from being an urban area that is cheaper than Boston that's also linked to it by rail and bus. Unlike Quincy there isn't any Coastal properties but again if they put more money into the park system. If they made DW Park like Forest Park in Springfield it would be a huge asset.

The other part of the decline is the fairgrounds gradually faded. The Kearney family knows horse racing they can do on an excellent show but the focus of gambling in Massachusetts shifted to casinos, not horses. Christos the Greek salad King restaurant closed or at least dramatically consolidated. It had excellent food but the marketing was horrible. Etc

So I would assume that the political structure in Brockton has done nothing to revitalize the city with new industries an technology.
It appears to me that the political structure has been kicking the can down the road for some time, and no real plans to revitalize the city.
I have so many fond memories of Brockton.
I have lived in Los Angeles for 50 years now, but I can say I was glad I lived in Brockton when I did.
Those memories are hard to eradicate.

Has it really calmed down? Maybe all the violence did migrate to Easton after all...

My first thought was that Vincent's is leaving a void to be filled, which may be an opportunity for a place like this. This looks quite a bit smaller though.
