I'd say watertown because of affordablility. Newton can be pricey though its a nice community.

Watertown has some bus routes that go right to Harvard Square and its right on the Mass Pike

Commuter rail service is available from Waverly station or Belmont

you aren't that far from Alewife either for parking and for the RED LINE Subway "T" Service.

Lots of services nearby in Newton and Allston-Brighton- Harvard Square-Porter-Davis Squares Cambridge, Belmont Center, Fresh Pond area. etc.

The Charles River and Fresh Pond provide for good recreational activities.

Watertown schools are above average

Thanks everyone! We are going with the home in Newton! First grade is important to us primarily because my son had a rough Kindergarten year. His teacher left on maternity leave in the middle of the year, and we did not have the best long term sub for the rest of the school year. I don't want two mediocre school experiences for him back to back. This was at the crux of our decision for choosing where to live and where to send my son to school. However, those that assumed that my husband and I are both well educated are right.

Check with the school about the daily schedule--I've heard Newton schools have once a week half days.
