We currently rent a home in East Memphis in a very established neighborhood off of Kirby (north of Poplar). But we are looking for a neighborhood maybe with younger families. I think in this neighborhood most of the kids are older or off to college.

We have been looking more toward the center of town as it seems to fit our personalities better. But it is definitely a different feel compared to where we have been living. Where we live now is pretty much Germantown. The two homes that we have our eye on are on Alexander Street just north of Central -the other is on Cowden by Central and Greer - I guess this is the Joffre neighborhood?

How is this area in terms of safety? I feel 100% comfortable now having my kids ride their bikes on the sidewalk after school. We take walks in the neighborhood with the kids and walk the dog and feel safe as well. I wonder if the Joffre area will offer the same sense of security.

The thing about our current neighborhood is that there is never anyone out. I know there are kids around but we never see them. Occasionally we see someone walking their dog. I wonder if we will find kids out playing in other areas of town - specifically the two areas mentioned above. Or maybe this is a thing of the past/something I remember from my childhood that doesn't really exist today.

Any opinions at all about this neighborhood is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello; I have lived in the Joffre neighborhood before and loved it. Due to the smaller size of the homes, it consists mainly of:

A) young professionals with no children
B) young professionals with small children
C) older folks with no children at home

There were always tons of people out jogging, walking dogs, and walking strollers. It's a very friendly neighborhood and people seemed to know everyone.

I never experienced any crime in Joffre. There is a strong neighborhood association with weekly emails that go out.

Send me a direct message if you'd like more specifics.

I've never heard of any problems in Joffre besides the occasional property crime (unavoidable considering that the neighborhood is sandwiched between lots of major thoroughfares).

Joffre is one of my absolute favorite neighborhoods in the city. The neatly lined bungalows there give the neighborhood a very 1950s look -- in a good way. Absolutely charming area with unsurpassed convenience and reasonable housing prices.

Best wishes.

my opinion is that anywhere in a 3 block radius or so, you can be in somehwhat a sketchy area..I mean the area is not 'bad' in general but there would be no way I would swap living off Kirby, NORTH of Poplar for safety and amenities, etc, especially if you're around Quail Hollow or near streets like Cottingham ? , or anywhere within 4 blocks of the Temple..no way

To much rift raft travels that area by foot

If you must, choose the Cowden address. Cowden runs east/west. Whereas Alexander runs north/south
