Both First Tennessee and Regions seem to have a strong presence -- First Tennessee perhaps more so. However, First Tennessee pays squat for interest rates. So what I do is keep a small amount in there for the occasional last minute ATM withdrawals, but keep most of my money in Regions.

I still have my Bank of America account for access to money when I go back to NJ, but don't really use it. Bank of America is just too inconvenient to access (for me at least).

I would recommend doing what I do -- have accounts in both Regions and First Tennessee if convenience and ease of access to your money is a big factor for you. If it's not a big deal, I would recommend Regions.

Don't have any experience with credit unions so I'll stay out of that part of the discussion.

BTW I recently got back from New Orleans. I forgot to go to the ATM in Memphis, but was able to find 2 Regions banks near my hotel (1 was just a 5 minute walk). That was a pleasant surprise. The closest Bank of America was 48 miles away.

All but the smallest banks (and credit unions too, for that matter) are on nationwide ATM networks. You can access your account from just about anywhere. In some cases you may have to pay a small fee - but it may be worth it for the convenience.

Many credit unions are also part of a shared branching network. That means that you can go into any office of any credit union in that network nationwide and make deposits or withdrawals in person at the teller line.
