i think birmingham is one of my favorite cities of all time. i have visited there for years, i have lived there on two occasions, and i like the people of the area. nonetheless, birmingham is neither larger in its physical size downtown, nor is it physically larger in population. if emporis kept its data accurately and up to date, it might be one source for information; however, it is not up to date, and consequently, virtually useless.

to conclude, memphis is one of about 5 major metropolitan areas that has no designated CSA. it is 1 of 3 of the 25 largest metropolitan areas that has no such designation. even so, memphis has an estimated MSA of 1.3+ mil, as of 7/09. birmingham-hoover has an estimated 1.2 mil, as of 3/10. this 1.2 mil number apparently includes the area from birmingham to culman, a distance of about 55 miles, and is part of the CSA. jefferson county, in which birmingham rests, has an estimated population of 660,000, while shelby county, tn, in which part of memphis proper rests, has an estimated 926,000. actually, that number is more accurately estimated to be 937, 603.

I think Memphis has a pretty good skyline for a city of its size. It's certainly better than Little Rock's and Nashville's. Plus the Pyramid and the M bridge add a little something unique to it.

i don't think little rock is in the running, when you consider southern city skylines. there is no density in the city core. i, however, read several weeks ago someone else thought that little rock had one of the nicest skylines in the south-south east. i haven't been in little rock overnight in probably 4 or 5 years; nevertheless, i just have a difficult time believing nashville's downtown core is smaller than little rock's, at this time. i am in nashville usually twice or more every month.
