Many of the new condos that I believe you are referring to are in "up and coming areas" such as edgewater and downtown, and therefore lack the safe, 24-hour atmosphere of many established areas such as Brickell Ave., South Beach, Aventura, and maybe even the Coconut Grive condo scene. The "up and coming areas" would be a great place to invest in, if you plan on being here more than 5 years. Anything less, and you might be taking unnecessary risk. Do your research and plan for the long term if you plan on buying.

Apartments get affected just as much as homes probably more because when there is no power and you live on the 12th floor, you will need to climb stairs...

My advice, if you are deathly afraid of hurricanes, then move somewhere else... If you can handle the inconvenience every few years then come on down...

Reason why I never moved to Cali is because of earthquakes or why I never moved to Kansas because of tornadoes...

The pros outweigh the cons which is why many of us are here...

All construction in Miami is built to really strict building codes to protect against hurricanes, especially all the high-rises in Downtown, Brickell and Edgewater. Those high-rises are almost bunkers.
