Horrible, just horrible. Apparently, public infrastructure isn't the only thing that needs to be looked into in the USA.

This reminded me of this.

Underground garages are quite common in Florida, isn't this the case in California or in other places?

An overall horrific incident, disheartens me that no other survivors have been pulled out since I started watching coverage at 9 am.
I wonder if they are not reporting survivors just like they aren't reporting deaths?

It's early days yet, but according to some sources this building had been sinking for years.

So the building association will be going to be facing a copious amount of wrongful death lawsuits and possible jail time right?

From above linked news piece as per local law requiring buildings to be recertified every 40 years, this place was undergoing that process currently. However there were at least two instances of complaints from an owner about cracks or something. Those complaints prompted some sort of legal action, but was settled and "damage" corrected.

Again it is early days so no one can really say what caused this incident, and it certainty is far to early for assigning blame.

That being said yes, there is likely going to be a *f* ton of future legal action against any and everything remotely involved with this building.

Yes, it is. It's called "soft story" building. California is working to get rid of it. Hopefully Florida will follow suit.

Well, if we had earthquakes here, would agree, however, we do not, so they are fine.

Inexperienced contractors and cheap materials over those family's safety. Shame on the investors and general contractors of this building. The condo fees alone could have a hirer an expert to inspect the building quarterely.
