Well I was right about 2 of the 3 points I made on that post, especially about Mauer.

The fact is that from almost 2 years ago, things have changed....

1. Economy hasn't picked up like everyone thought
2. The State budget is still like 4 billion in debt
3. LA has some SERIOUS plans to build a brand new stadium. The NFL can't dismiss that despite how many times football has failed there, a new stadium in this era means millions more in revenue.
4. The state of MN has built stadiums for the Twins and Gophers and pretty much ignored any request up until now to even listen to the Vikings about a new stadium (basically disrespected the team).
5. The Metrodome isn't even a functional facility at this point in time, and would cost millions to fix. As of now, the vikings have no home.
6. I said roger goodell would have to approve, and at the time of that post goodell was committed to keeping the Vikings in MN and getting a stadium deal done. Well it's been 2 years, they're no more closer from a legislative standpoint than they were 2 years ago, are they? the NFL has grown tired and there's ample opportunity rising up in LA.

I personally think they're gonna move. I can't see anything getting done in time. I have no faith in Minnesota government, and quite honestly I feel the majority of the population would say good riddance if they left.

The new owners of the Atlanta Thrashers are moving the team to Winnipeg.

Nice update. I love this move. It only seems logical that a team is removed from a place where people couldn't care less about the sport and go to a place where everyone is hockey crazed. A few more moves like this and the NHL may be saved after all.

There actually is a local fan base in Atlanta, though maybe not a huge one, but the folks who own the trashers haven't exactly presented Atlanta with a competitive product. It should be no surprise that there were so few hard-core fans here. The team sucked.

Understandable, but you must realize that whatever fan-base there absolutely pales in comparison to the passion that the people of Winnipeg have for hockey. We were up there a while back and we couldn't even find any sports radio stations that covered anything besides hockey, whether on the local high school/collegiate or the pro-level...and mind you, this was when they didn't even have an NHL franchise. Now they do, and I'm happy for them. It just makes sense.

I agree the move makes sense in some respects, but I know enough angry fans down here to be aware of the real story, and being a long-time North Stars fan I also empathize strongly with the people down here. They got screwed by a cheap owner. Period.

At least this is a move to a Canadian city which loves hockey and not a move to a southern city in Texas.

I'm sure there are some bitter locals, but being the only NHL team to have average attendance below 80% for the last 3 seasons just isn't going to cut it. Also, I don't think you're going to find too many diehard NHL fans outside of Atlanta who aren't completely in favor of this move. From a utilitarian standpoint this is the right move.

Would seem to make some sense for Winnipeg to replace Minnesota in Northwest, the Wild then moving back into their rightful place in the Norris (apparently called the Central these days) and Nashville then moving from the Central to the Southeast. So that won't happen.
