Those who love hockey, really, really love it. But there aren't as many of them as it might seem. I've seldom heard anyone talk about hockey.

Ironic, no? Why does this "Hockey State" never seem to have a professional contender? The Stanley Cup should be Minnesota's to lose.

Because 'professional' sports have little to do with the actual area they play in. Grass-roots-wise, the Twin Cities are home to US Hockey Players. The majority of USA-born NHL- hockey players are from Minnesota. Minnesota has the best HS hockey in the country, and 5 DI hockey schools to go with it. Many of the NHL's biggest super stars in the past are Minnesotans. The Miracle on Ice team was coached by all Minnesotans, and 16/20 kids were Minnesotans.

I dont know why you would assume that resonates to the NHL is pretty scary to me.

Blame the Wild's Front office. Norm Green (former owner of the North Stars) once said "Only an Idiot could lose money on Hockey in Minnesota"

The idiots who run the Wild are idiots and they would have a good team if they didnt' get rid of our franchise guy-Marion Gaborik. Sure, the guy was a baby, and always was hurt, but like it or not, he put butts in seats. He got people interested. That 'buzz' if you will. If the Wild had a guy like Steven Stamkos, Alex Ovechkin, or Sid the Kid, they'd be the power house dynasty of the NHL. Around the NHL, Minnesota is known as an excellent franchise to be apart of -Playing in a state of the art arena, in front of educated hockey fans, and sold out crowds every night?

Just like the Loser Wolves, without a giant super star, the Wild will always be mediocre.

Target Field wouldnt have brought in 4 million people last year with a team that didnt have Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.

Minnesota sports fans would find something to whine and complain about regardless of how our teams are doing.

...
Which is simply why I pointed out that it was ironic.

That scares you?

Put together a professional hockey team comprised of MN hockey products and THEN see how good MN hockey really is. The Wild is not a "MN Hockey Team" it is a hockey team that plays in MN-big difference.

Not possible given the current state of professional hockey. Would be interesting, but I suspect the Canadians would still dominate.

Probably but I figured we were talking about MN compared to other states in the US.

You could do a "fantasy league" MN team for comparison to the rest of the league.

Both of these cities are a lot smaller than any of the three Canadian cities (Winnipeg, Quebec City and Hamilton) that are currently without NHL clubs.
