I would stay out of Minneapolis and St Paul. I'm a product of the Minneapolis public school system, but that was 40 years ago. A lot has changed since then.
We can agree to disagree on that one. Granted I'm still working in the Twin Cities when we have children, I will be proudly sending my kids to Minneapolis public schools. MARK IT!

Yes, it wasn't my intention to bash MPS. Compared to other states, Minnesota schools are among the best. City as well as outstate.

Default Richfield Schools

If you haven't been to Richfield Public Schools, then please don't post a negative comment based on hearsay. Did you know Richfield Public boasts a robust Spanish Immersion School (RDLS) that currently has a waiting list for enrollees? Compare this to the situation where Minneapolis' Emerson & Windom Spanish Immersion programs both have unknown futures. Richfield will also open a STEM School option for grades K-5 (Science and Technology-based) the Fall of 2010. And I believe we have the only all-day Kindergarten program that you don't have to pay any extra fees to attend. I know that the all-day Kinder option in Bloomington Public schools is over $300 per month.

There is definitely a new young family vibe in Richfield. Yes, we do have our older residents who are selling their single family homes and moving to condos and assisted living but that leaves solid homes that were well-maintained and simply need updating for a new family. Richfield is a great bargain in both housing pricing and taxes. I moved to Richfield from south Minneapolis and can attest to this fact. There are a great deal of new young families pumping life into this community.

As for the person who commented on the inability to make friends at their child's school, my advice would be to get involved in the PTSO/PTO groups. Plenty of happy and friendly people there. We're always looking for people to step up and and join in the cause.

Twin Cities overall is safe even the "roughest" neighborhoods are good
Kennedy is good its just that theres alot of comedians there but its still diverse and good experience in education

Both have poor[er] schools than other suburbs (except W. Bloomington). Anyone I know who lives in this area (where I also live) knows where to buy and where not to buy a home based mostly on schools (nobody I know is afraid of crime or diversity in either suburb). Sorry if that rubs you the wrong way richfieldgal17, but that's at least the perception/stigma that is out there, and that may very well be why, consequently, you can find cheaper housing PER SQUARE FOOT in parts of those cities.

I live in Richfield right now, off of 494, and I don't know what you all mean by the traffic issue. Personally, I think the traffic is infinitely lighter than most of the twin cities area. The only times I ever wind up stuck in traffic is when I'm going to or coming from the Mall of america.
Pricewise, renters in Richfield take advantage of the location. I am literally 2 minutes from MoA and we pay outrageous rent, which is why I'm moving as soon as my lease is up.

^Uhhhhh....494 in that stretch is backed up for 12 hours a day, depending on the season. The alternatives (Hwy 62, 78th St., American Blvd, etc.) are backed up any time 494 is too busy. I used to work near MOA and lived near Lake Calhoun and commute time was easily 30 minutes on a good day, and over an hour on a busy day in the summer, for instance. The state has long range plans to widen 494 to 4 lanes in each direction from 28th Ave to Eden Prairie, all because it's just so damn congested!

I have been in Bloomington West side for 6 years and the schools are the best. You cant beat them but its so expensive here. We are going to have to move.

STD = short-term disability??? JK ;-)

If I lived in Bloomington I'd want to live in an East side neighborhood but go to a West Side school district.
