Why I-55? You can take US 61 and stay close to the river the entire time. There are a few blues museums along the way. And the Muppet Museum in Leland. You can head over to Greenville and have a bite at Doe's Eat Place which has been on the Food Network numerous times.

OK. I made reservations at Monmouth Plantation so that part has been decided. Now to move on to thinking about shops to visit, restaurants to try, specific tourist attractions, etc. for Natchez, Vicksburg, etc. If anyone has any specific suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again to all who have taken the time to help me!

I would also recommend Vicksburg National Military Park, downtown Natchez, and Port Gibson.

Actually, the best idea I have read in this thread is to take US61 South from Memphis - take exit 7 off I-55 - and just run it South all the way through Mississippi, into Louisiana and into I-12 West headed for Texas. (Exit 5 is for Graceland, if you are interested)

The reason I like that idea is that it will enable you to see more of what would interest you. You'll go right past the gambling casinos, the Mississippi Delta (it's really an flood plain, not a delta), , then Vicksburg, Port Gibson, and Natchez.

I'm more of seat-of-the-pants traveler than most folks, so I wouldn't even bother with reservations this time of year, but that's just me.

The Delta is interesting because it is where the Blues was established in America as a form of music. All the great Blues pioneers are from this area. It is also one of the poorest sections of America, and you will see for yourself what everyone is talking about. It's not dangerous in any way that I am aware of, just poor.

Have a great trip!

If you want something really unique, google The Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale. It is the blues town and is near the river-Friar's Point where you can actually walk into the river. Home of Conway Twitty. Morgan Freeman has a restaurant and blues club in Clarksdale but the INN is the most unique place to stay. Just off I-55 south of Memphis. Check it out.
