1860s Desperadoes In Audrain County

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/9743...souri_message/

On Christmas Eve in 1902 in Jasper, Mo., jewelryman J.B. Hall was conducting a raffle in his store in front of a large crowd. A man named Charles Crews came in and told Hall he wanted to talk to him. Hall told him he was too busy to talk at that time and Crews became angry. Crews began following him around the store using abusive language and Hall ordered him to leave.
He refused, and walked up to Hall in a threatening manner. Hall picked up an iron bar and began striking Crews over the head. Crews pulled a pocket knife out and slashed Hall across the face. When the fight was over, Hall had to get 11 stitches to sew up the gash on his face and Crews, who was staggering around dazed from the blows on the head, was arrested for assault with intent to kill.
