The Lincoln Star Nebraska August 9, 1931

Potosi, Mo., Aug 8--- This mining community today was recovering from the horror of the wholesale killing of 4 persons and the critical wounding of a fifth following an argument between two miners in the bottom of a 15 foot tiff mine.
Elliott Missey, 40, shot and killed John Pitzer, 55, after they had quarreled over the right of their mine holding, Sheriff W.J. Simmons declared. Missey then turned his shotgun on Clarence Beach and wounded him critically. Climbing out of the mine pit, Missey walked to the home of John Coleman, another miner, and shot and killed him. Missey then went to his own home, locked his six children in the barn and shot his wife to death. The miner then killed himself.

Chillicothe Constitution Tribune September 26, 1935

An unidentified bank bandit was shot when he emerged from the Irondale Bank at Irondale, Missouri, today, using William Jamison, cashier, as a shield after looting the place of an undetermined amount of cash. During the time the loot was being taken, Jamison stepped on an alarm and the two men who answered the alarm opened fire on the bandit as he left the bank. Jamison fell to the sidewalk and escaped injury. The bandit was shot in the right shoulder and left leg. He refused to identify himself.

LaMance Is Held For Trial
Osteopath Bound Over On Charge He Choked His Wife To Death

Laclede, Mo., Sept. 1----Dr. William E LaMance must be tried on the charge that his big hands, with which he smashed his way to triumph in the boxing ring, were the weapons which he killed his pretty wife, Ella, a week before her body was found in a backyard fruit cellar. The state's demand that the 200-pound osteopath be bound over for court prosecution on a first degree murder charge was granted late yesterday by L.L. Libby, justice of the peace, after a two-day preliminary hearing. Attorneys for the former Kentucky college athlete had contended none of the state's 16 witnesses linked him even indirectly with his 20-year old wife's death nor had disproved their theory the former nurse took poison. Prosecutor G. Derk Green climaxed his chain of circumstantial evidence by drawing from Coroner John H Lucas the expressed opinion Mrs. LaMance was choked and beaten to death, probably on the night of August 9. Dr. Lucas said he based his opinion on a blood clot found on the temple and a mark stretching from ear to ear on the neck. His volunteered remark that a "Fist" could have caused death brought Lon R Owen, defense attorney, to his feet, shouting: " Now why did you say that, wasn't it because you know this defendant has quite a reputation as a boxer?" Dr. LaMance fought for six years as an amateur light heavyweight, winning tournaments at Chicago, Kansas City, and appearing once at Madison Square Garden in New York. Prosecutor Green said the state's evidence indicated Dr. LaMance took to drinking, quarreled over it with his wife, had mentioned "Divorce," and killed Mrs. LaMance the night of August 9 when he returned from fishing and a round of beer drinking. Officers found the body shortly after being called to the home. The defense sought in cross-examination of Coroner Lucas to show the blood clot on the head could have been caused by a bump as Mrs. LaMance writhed in the death throes of self-administered poison. The defense, drawing from Dr. Lucas the admission his estimate of the approximate time of death might be off by 24 hours, said that rendered uncertain the state premise that the night of August 9 was the date. Dr. LaMance has said his wife was gone that night when he returned home.

The Green family, consisting of A.M. Green and his five sons, whose arrest for the murder of David Hildebrand is attracting such widespread attention, have been transferred from the jail at Steelville, Crawford County, to the Washington County jail of Potosi for safe keeping. Fear of their being lynched if left in the Steelville jail was the cause of the transfer.
