Okay...summer is coming...lots of road trips coming up...what is your favorite Montana restaurant? A nice Mom and Pop place...local cuisine...absolute "must not miss"...

I have a few places...one is "Spring Creek Cafe"...about 20 miles or so from Bozeman...way off the beaten track...and...you need a reservation to eat there. Not expensive, good food, very homey. I had ribs last time....yummy.

Today we went driving around the lakes by Helena...went to "York"...had a burger at the little bar in town....with grilled onions. Good eats.

The Shak in Whitefish. The owners are from New Orleans, and they serve the best bbq in the area, IMO.

The Kirby Saloon, Kirby Montana.

Half a cow, or a whole pig roast.

Sir Scott's Oasis in Manhattan.

Still new to the area, but this was one of the first really great places recommended to us.

I'll 2nd The Oasis in Manhattan. It was even featured in a national beef campaign in the late 80s. "Beef its whats for dinner in Manhattan... Montana."

Huge steaks last time I was there. One was dinner for two.

The LaHood bar near Whitehall used to have the best pasties I ever ate, but it has been a couple of years since I was there.

The Timber Bar in Big Timber has the best food at the best price in town even though there are a couple of other places that are pricier.

There is a little bar in Clyde Park a couple of blocks off the main drag that has really good chicken. Everything I have ever gotten there has been really good and fresh made.

I cannot remember the name of the place, something like the Corner Bar, but it is the only restaraunt in town and sits on the 4 way stop in the middle of town of Winnett. Their pies are world famous and I can say that because they have been written about in travel magazines. I don't know if Buck still runs the place as he was pretty sick the last time I saw him, and I know that the elderly lady that made all the pies has passed, but her daughter was still working there and had the same talent.

Most (not all), of the cafes and restaraunts in small towns have good homestyle cooking, if they don't, they don't last long even if they are the only place in town, so I have no problem stopping in at a new place as I travel around the state.

I have found some of the best food I have ever had when I was tired and dirty and had been out beating the bushes while hunting all day, and found a place just when I just couldn't go any further.

I liked Sir Scott's, (Manhattan) and the Land of Magic in Logan when I lived in that area.

One of the best sandwiches to-go I've ever had was from a little diner/lunch place in Ennis; I don't think it was the Ennis Cafe, because it was a small store front, and a long narrow inside space. But it was either the same block or the next one going East, and the same side of the street as the Ennis Cafe. They packed our sandwiches with big slices of real turkey, fresh lettuce etc, and threw in a bag of chips and an apple, just like Mom would do!
