Is there any way to get back and fore between Santa Cruz and Salinas using public transportation? Also besides the boardwalk what other things are for a tourist to do in Santa Cruz? My third question is the Steinbeck House something worth visiting in Salinas?

You can check out the Monterey -> Santa Cruz bus options here: Transit Connections | Monterey-Salinas Transit

I don't know the answer to your other questions as it really depends what a 'tourist' would like to do. When we go to Santa Cruz we enjoy visiting the beaches and redwoods in places like Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Never been to the Steinbeck House.

Public transit is possible, but it's not convenient. You basically have two choices:
1. Take an MST bus from Salinas to Watsonville and a Metro bus from Watsonville to Santa Cruz.
2. Take a Grayhound bus from Salinas to Santa Cruz (probably the better option).

As for things to check out in Santa Cruz, what are you looking for (e.g. hiking, museums)? There's lots of great things to do!

As for the Steinbeck House, it all depends on what you're interested in. The Steinbeck House is a restaurant that serves lunch and also has a little gift shop in the basement. The Steinbeck Center two blocks away is definitely worth visiting if you have any interest in Steinbeck. It also has an interesting agricultural museum.

Walk, ride or drive the 10 miles along the ocean bluffs from the boardwalk to Natural Bridges State Park, and take a tour there.

Drive around the UCSC campus, which is wooded with redwoods etc, and has a stunning view of the ocean as you emerge from the trees.

Stroll down Pacific Ave downtown, check out the boutiques, listen to the street musicians, and take a coffee break.

If you can make it to Capitola, you can eat/drink on a patio (forget the name of the restaurant) right on the beach, and watch the young hunks play volleyball :-)

In Santa Cruz, you should be able to watch surfers, too.

You'll notice in my old age that I am watching other people exercise...

So is the Steinbeck House where the author actually lived rather than the Steinbeck Center?

My trip is planned for mid-August. So I assume this won't be relevant then.

The Steinbeck House is where Steinbeck was born and grew up. The bed he was born in can be viewed in the gift shop. However, he also lived in various other houses in Pacific Grove, Monterey and Los Gatos as an adult. I know that he lived in the Laura Soto Adobe in Monterey for a year, which is now the admissions office for the Monterey Institute of International Studies. It's been said that he wrote The Pearl while living at the adobe, being inspired by a story on previous occupants. The adobe is said to be haunted .

The Steinbeck Center is a museum on Steinbeck and his works, which was built in the late 90's. It's much more interesting than the Steinbeck House.
