I like many of Jason Reitman's films (every one that I've seen!), including Kindergarten Cop (1990) with Penelope Ann Miller being the draw, Thank You for Smoking (2005), Juno (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and Young Adult (2011). I think the last four are essential viewing. This is his third collaboration with writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult, Tully). Some are calling the three Reitman / Cody films a trilogy - with the last two starring Charlize Theron as the main protagonist. I initially ranked this #10 for 2018 films and after thinking about it, moved it up to #5. I rank 2017 films with 2018 U.S. release dates in my 2018 list, so depending on how you do it, this one could be #3 (#1 and #2 are 2017).
We saw "Tully" today
Some parts of it (as a mom of two) rang very true and I give Theron top marks for gaining the weight and looking flabby...
that was genuine flab running in the park...
After "Atomic Blonde" that change took lot of courage in her ability to do the work to lose the weight...
And she is such a GOOD actress that there are no false notes in her performance really--
My qualms aren't with her--but the script...
Some parts of it were more of a cheat
Spoiler
The waitress scene for example because that is what causes her husband to mention the night nurse to her brother
There was more going on with her than just sleep deprivation and the movie just glossed over lot of that anger and depression...
Too easy of an outcome
I liked "Tully" and there are some aspects that are super-good--no regrets for seeing it--
but comparing the two, "Young Adult" was really a better movie...IMO at least
It's been a couple of days since I saw it and I'm still thinking about it. That tells me a lot about the complexity when taken as a whole...
Spoiler
I find myself trying to figure out which scenes were reality and which happened only in Marlo's mind. My sense is not many. Even Drew's cookie cutter existence (work, home, video game) is too repetitious to not be from her mind. Maybe the only reality was the hospital scenes at the end?
Throughout the film there is the foreshadowing of underwater scenes, in commercials, dreams - throwing in a few mermaids. My theory, which could change if I saw it again, is that her car never went into the water (so Tully did not save her, because, well - because). My favorite scene of all was when Jonah has his tantrum in the new school and the teacher calms him lickity split. That and the meltdown at the principle's office.
I may have to see this again. I'm sure that was Jason Reitman's and Diablo Cody's plan all along.
I started this movie several weeks ago and got as far as the reunion. Then did most of the flick on Sunday and finished the last 40 minutes on Monday. Despite the high marks on IMDB, I'd say it's iffy.
Just very long with a lot of whole bunch of nothing going on as we wait for something to happen. There are a few moments of excitement but for the most part, the tension rather flat lines.
I haven't seen that many Brando flicks and if this was my first one, I probably wouldn't bother with him again.
Theater in my area showing Viva Zapata w /Brando
Surpising choice
Dont think a viable Cinco de Mayo choice
