I've seen There Will Be Blood (2007) and find it a very good movie which perfectly explains how corporations and organised religion (read: ambition) influences the working Joe.
The only good guy in the whole story is the deaf orphan boy.

The Island of Dr. Moreau - too gross and dark for me, but it was interesting

Hellboy - better than I expected. It was funny, plus Hellboy lives in New Jersey, which is always a bonus.

Tried watching the Michael Mann movie verseion of Miami Vice last night. I think I made it about an hour in before I gave up. Bad dialogue, unmotivated characters, the only one of which I cared about died in the first five minutes. Flat-out boring movie. But some very pretty visuals.

I've just seen Conspiracy with Val Kilmer and My Mom's New Boyfriend with Antonio Banderas, Meg Ryan, Colin Hanks and Selma Blair.
My Mom's New Boyfriend is a decent comedy, not good but not bad either.
I found Conspiracy better than any Rambo movie with the exception of First Blood.
The only difference between Conspiracy and the Rambo movies is that it isn't as patriotic.

I have just seen Jump! and am pleasantly surprised.
I normally don't think much of Patrick Swayze's acting career, but this movie is really good.
I guess the story had something to do with it because the movie is about the 1st Jew being trailed by a fascist regime.
The events in the movie really happened and the transcript of the trial was used so it should be indisputable.

I watched Freedom Writers this weekend. What a great story! I'm going to get the book it was based on. Hillary Swank was ok but the kids who were in it were really good. It was the first time I saw Mario from DWTS in anything besides that! I really liked the movie. Definitely makes you think.

Rewatched March of the Wooden Soldiers yesterday. It's terrific, funny, adorable...a great movie for the whole family.

Default Three good ones this weekend

We had a mini-movie fest this weekend, given we weren't going anywhere.

The three of us critics gave the following ratings:

** to No Reservations. Mostly because the original, French-version is a little better, what with the music and all. Still, this is a cute flick with the little girl from Little Miss Sunshine in it.

**** to The Bucket List. Jack Nicholson is his usual cantankerous self. If you don't like Nicholson, you won't like the film, possibly. Morgan Freeman keeps Nicholson from dominating the film. All three of us cried over the 'bucket list,' and seeing it come to fruition. Uplifting.

*** to **** to Atonement. Two of us loved it. Two uf us had trouble following the storyline as it meandered from the past to the present, and back again, several times throughout the film, but I loved the telling like it did -- adds to the 'suspense,' I thought. Good drama, little bit of history, and tear-jerking love story, albeit sad. I loved seeing Vanessa Redgrave.

American Beauty. I had seen this movie when it was first released, and hadnt seen it since. I love Kevin Spacey and Thora Birch. But the movie overall is ok.
