"Don't Pay the Ferryman" by Chris de Burgh (released in 1982, peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983)
"It was late at night on the open road,
Speeding like a man on the run,
A lifetime spent preparing for the journey;
"He is closer now and the search is on,
Reading from a map in the mind,
Yes there's the ragged hill,
And there's the boat on the river.
And when the rain came down,
He heard a wild dog howl,
There were voices in the night - "Don't do it!"
Voices out of sight - "Don't do it!
Too many men have failed before,
Whatever you do,
"Don't pay the ferryman,
Don't even fix a price,
Don't pay the ferryman,
Until he gets you to the other side ..."
"Sneaky Snake" by Tom T. Hall (1974) and "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine" (1972)
"Boys and girls take warning
If you go near the lake
Keep your eyes wide open
And look for sneaky snake
"Now, maybe you won't see him
And maybe you won't hear
But he'll sneak up behind you
And drink all your root beer
"And then sneak snake goes dancing
Wiggling and a-hissing
Sneaky snake goes dancing
A-giggling and a-kissing
I don't like old sneaky snake
He laughs too much you see
When he goes wiggling through the grass
It tickles his underneath ..."
"How old do you think I am he said I said well I didn't know
He said I turned sixty five about eleven months ago
I was sittin' in Miami pourin' blended whiskey down
When this old gray black gentleman was cleanin' up the lounge
There wasn't anyone around 'cept this old man and me
The guy who ran the bar was watching Iron sides on TV
Uninvited he sat down and opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine
Ever had a drink of watermelon wine he asked
He told me all about it though I didn't answer back
Ain't but three things in this world that's worth a solitary dime
But old dogs and children and watermelon wine ..."
Thanks for the replies everyone! Love these random-topic songs, lol.
I just remembered Herman's Hermits singing about Henry the VIII. Not your typical lyrical subject, haha.
That's about marriage! The lady has been married "seven times before"~all of them named "Henery" (sic). He's her eighth husband, also named "Henery" (sic)! So, it's basically love and romance, not at all about the one-time King of England.
However, I guess you could include "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm", which is about Henry VIII's ill-fated wife, Anne Boleyn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNyFmOG0ujg

It's about driving and appreciating an exceptional car when vehicles (at least of that type) are prohibited ...
"My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time ..."
Like Rush, Kansas has a large number of songs about "things and other stuff". "Song for America" was written about the land before and after colonization.
