First off sorry for posting this poll just one day after the 1988 poll, but I decided to finish off the 1980's polls and let them simmer for a few days.
I won't be posting any more polls until Tuesday or Wednesday, and the next series will be the 1960's since I already did one poll on 1966.
Okay so this is now 1989 and the last of the 80's polls. Like 1988, 33 songs hit the top of the charts, excluding "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Poison which rolled over.
So time to close out the 80's, which is your favorite of this last 80's poll? I decided to make the 1989 poll a multiple choice, so you have the option of choosing more than one song. Should have done the same with previous polls.
Personally I think this year is pretty weak, lots of forgettable stuff, only the Madonna song would be considered "classic" objectively.
But there are a few good songs, since it is multiple choice, I chose "Living Years" and "Good Thing" which to me is the better Fine Young Cannibals Song. Oh and the Simply Red tune which is actually a cover, heck throw Madonna in there.
But that is about it, weakest 80's year of all the polls I posted.
1989 was a total pile of garbage.. One word describes 1989.. "Batdance"
I went with "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "She Drives Me Crazy".. "Fire" wasn't really a great song, but.. Props for writing and pulling off the performance..
I'll give a little love to Toy Soldiers and The Living Years as well.
And, I will say.. 25+ years on.. Milli Vanilli.. Not that bad. Obviously, it wasn't Rob and Fab singing and it was a huge fraud, but the singers who DID sing did good and the songs weren't horribly bad.. Again.. "Batdance"
"Waiting for a Star To Fall" by boy Meets Girl.. Good song that never made it to #1.
That's something of a companion to this.. What I mentioned in another topic.. Sometimes there's some real good songs that are blocked from ever hitting #1 by a juggernaut. Less so here in 1989 vs earlier years.
I went with "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel.
I loved the song and the concept of incorporating all the historical elements into a rock song.
On the first day of one of my college classes, the professor played this song and we went through and focused on the events the song referred to. It turned out to be a great class.
Lots of weak songs that year.....sometimes I hope for a 90s FM station to appear in my city, but then they would play all the crap on this list. Like A Prayer by far the best song, with Fine Young Cannibals close behind.
I wish I could choose Roxette "Dressed for Success." That was a fun one, but I guess it wasn't a #1.
Somehow I thought that "Wind Beneath My Wings" was from at least 10 years earlier.
