One of the greatest arguments I ever heard was whether Roy Orbison was blind or not.. When I came in and told the guy he was not blind.. He went into a tirade about him being a 'fake blind' and he couldn't believe that he liked his music so much.. Roy was wonderful, but.. Running Scared was not his best, or the best of '61.
This.. A very good year.. I refuse to vote more than 3, and I've got 7 to choose from..
Ok.. Please, Mr Postman is the first cut. Great song, historic song being the first Motown to hit #1.. But.. Tough competition and it's out.
Blue Moon and Will You Love Me Tomorrow.. Out as well. Strong, but.. Others are even better.. So.. One more cut to make.. The toughest one.
Travelin' Man is the final cut.
That leaves me with Tossin' And Turnin.. Hit the Road, Jack and Runaround Sue.
I didn't consider Elvis, because I voted for him in '60.
I'll give a special mention to Big, Bad John, and say it, along with the other songs I mention, could easily replace Tossin' and Turnin' on my list of three, pending on the day of the week and my mood.. BBJ was one of the first sort of "Spoken Word" songs that I can recall, and Johnny Cash would nail this method later on.
Hit the Road, Jack and Runaround Sue are always in the top three.
I vote for Hit the Road Jack and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? Both are all time classics. Ray was hot in the late '50s / early '60s. The Shirelles were the first of the girl groups and 'Will You Still Love Me' (written by Carol King & Gerry Goffin) was banned by some stations for its sexual inferences. In 1971, Carol King redid her song on the amazing Tapestry album.
