Musically.... and especially lyrically I loved them, and still do to this day...especially their sorta anti-redneck, anti-macho guy, anti-jock mentality. Lyrically, songs like "Territorial Pissings" and "Very Ape" are spot on..... Nirvana is one of the first bands that made it cool to be the outcast or the geek.
Many argue that they bascially ripped off bands like The Pixies. Still, they deserve credit for changing the direction of rock, and I do like a lot of their stuff.
I remember reading arcticles shortly before Cobain died where he stated that the next album was going to be more of an acoustic sounding album (heavily influenced by "Automatic For The People" by REM).
Thank God I never had to hear that. IMO, "Automatic" marked the beginning of REM's downfall for me. I absolutely detested that entire record.
I still like them a lot. I rarely listen to them but they had some great songs. My favorite is their first album 'Bleach' as it is their best group of songs, IMO.
That's how I felt about 'Out of Time'. I never understood the love for that album. The song with KRS-One makes me cringe.
LOL! Yeah, I know what you're saying about that one. Shiny Happy People gets old, too. But there's also good stuff like "Texarkana" and "Country Feedback."
IMO Automatic was REM's finest moment. Monster, though... wow. Trainwreck from which they've never recovered.
Nirvana was a good little three-piece. They were in the right place at the right time, but you really can't help wondering what music we missed out on.
Soundgarden's Superunknown and Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream (for example) have stood the test of time much better for me than the Nirvana trio+unplugged.

How could I forget Shiny Happy People?! It's not as bad as Radio Song but I agree, it got old real quick.

I am always switching around my favorite REM album. More often than not I go with Fables of the Reconstruction. But it can always be Murmur... who knows. They were so consistently great for so long.
I never got into Soundgarden but to me Smashing Pumpkins did not stand the test of time at all. Nirvana still sound great and "undated" to me whenever I decide to give them a listen.
