Nirvana? They were a one trick pony.
Not to mention the lyrics (what the heck are they about?) the lack of musical talent on Cobain's part (I have heard guys in coffee houses who can play better than he could) and you are left with a mediocre band at best.
If Nirvana is a one-trick pony band, they're certainly one of the best one-trick pony bands I've ever heard. I do think that the band is a little overrated, but I can't deny that Kurt Cobain was a talented songwriter.
I liked Nirvana a lot more when I was a teenager in the 90's (something in their songs really appeals to the teenage mentality), but these days, if I'm going to listen to a band with "whiny" lyrics, I'd rather listen to Alice in Chains.

This pretty much sums up my view of the band, really.
There are and have been a lot of "one-trick" bands out there, and even some of them have been selling records for longer than Cobain's lifetime. AC/DC, Motorhead, ZZ Top to name a few.
I listen to Nirvana now more than I did back then. I kind of resented all the jabronies jumping on the bandwagon so I kind of pulled away from them. Now today it is cool to sit in my room with the lights out and listen to Nevermind. I hear things I didn't notice at the time.
I agree.
They are always gonna be one of my favorite bands....now.
Not when Kurt was alive though.
Time works funny like that I guess.
