Don't get me wrong though. Playing bass well isn't "easy". Doing anything well is going to take work but you will be in demand as a player if you take this route.

Good points all - plus a can of worms and subject for another thread (why the glut of guitarists).
Talkin' drums and bass is talkin' rhythm section. There IS always a demand for this. Guitar, vocals, keyboards are less interchangeable.
A lot more ego involved in guitar playing, less so for the rhythm section. This adds to the guitar-glut.
