My wife and I live in St Louis and have a 4 year old son. We are in an extremely preliminary stage of talking about a move to Nashville. It's only an hour further from my hometown in southern Illinois than St Louis is. I was just wondering, if I need a safe suburb with good schools, where should I be looking? We would need 3br and a basement, preferably 2 bath in the $900/mo range. I expect to be able to make aroudn $50-60k and my wife around $20k for now.

Thanks!
AJ

A,

Little late to get on the forum today, but I’d be happy to help. My Juliet was the first area to pop to mind, but you’ll likely have options in Bellevue (Harpeth Valley Elementary ranks very well), Hendersonville (Indian Lake areas have a couple of different school options that are excellent; Nannie Berry for instance), Spring Hill (again, multiple, but Chapman’s Retreat is an area that come to mind), Nolensville (some of the areas still attend Sunset, or commonly referred to as Brentwood, schools), or Murfreesboro has Siegel and Blackman Schools that rank well too.

These are not just generalizations; there are just a lot of affordable areas to choose from with good schools around town. These can be harder to find in the Metro (or Davidson County) areas that make up most of Nashville proper, but the surrounding areas have solid options in many directions.

Do you know where you office locations will be? Do you have a few friends or family members that you might be inclined to live near? As you target the search for the forum contributors, they’ll get more specific for you (or at least help you search past discussions, grin).

By the way, what brings you our way other than proximity to home?

As a Nashville native now livingin STL, I will say that you should start looking in Hendersonville which is a northern burb of Nashville about 30 minutes from downtown Nashville. You can also look in Mt. Juliet which is an eastern burb. As far as the basement, you will not find them in abundance like you do here in STL or the midwest, you will most likely find a lot of crawl spaces and slab foundations. Good Luck!

Yes, if you're looking for a house with a basement as rec room space, that is not as common here. Homes here tend to have "bonus rooms" built over the 2-car garage.

Franklin and Hendersonville are the most referred suburbs. Renting in either for $900/month will be difficult, though.

You might find more options in Bellevue, which is an area of town in Nashville.
