I figured since the new interview season has already begun, I'd offer any insight/suggestions to those who were interested in the program.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Default Interviewed

I had my interview on 02/19/2011 I'm still waiting on a reply from NTF. I'm wondering who actually chooses the fellow. Does the person that interviewed you have the influence on if you are accepted are not? I feel I had a great interview, but there is nothing like confirmation.

They do have influence on whether or not you get in but they don't have total say-so.

I interview on April 9th for English and I am so excited! I am nervous, however, because my college GPA was just a 2.89, do you think this will be a negative view on how competent I am?
I have been reading a lot about what they want and I see that they need a lot of Math, Science, and Biology, but nothing about English. I suppose I should give it my all and do my best and if it is meant to be, it will happen!
Any interview advice?

Congrats!

I'm a graduate of the New Teacher Project. I interviewed with Texas Teaching Fellows and Nashville Teaching Fellows and decided to go with Texas. But the programs are very similar and the interviews were near identical.

Interview advice: For your lesson, pick an easy topic you can confidently teach/explain. Do NOT try to wow them with difficult, technical content knowledge. You will be delivering your lesson to a mixed group of potential fellows from all subject areas. Try to plan a lesson about something everyone can understand with little or no background in the subject.

Your evaluators will be administrators and teachers. Most likely, they won't teach your subject. I am a high school science teacher, interviewed as a science fellow, and my 4 interviewers/evaluators were: a retired elementary principal, a 2nd grade teacher, an assistant middle school principal, and a high school english teacher. Read up on the New Teacher Project beforehand (if you haven't already) so you have an idea of their vision for teachers and education. That will help you in the group discussion, the writing prompt, and the one-on-one interviews.

Another tip-- pack water, a lunch, and snacks. You'll be there until about 2pm. TTF had tons of food/water for us, but I don't even think NTF had water available.

Overall, my interviews were extremely positive experiences. Try not to stress too much, but also remember it's a really competitive program. A lot of people are turned away. Plus, they're having to turn even more away this year because of education budget cuts across the board. There just aren't as many jobs open as there used to be.

If you have any other questions about the program or what the first year is like, feel free to message me.
