Hi, we're evaluating Portsmouth as a potential retail business location and are wondering who out there visits Portsmouth, how old you are, and why you visit (shopping, historical places, beaches, etc). Thanks for any input you can offer!
I love Portsmouth! Go often to just walk around in the parks, go to the beach at Newcastle, eat dinner down town, etc etc....I am in my late 30's but have been going to Portsmouth since my UNH days! The bars and restaurants downtown are great, and the atmosphere is wonderful!!!! Good luck to you.
I think Portsmouth has a pretty wide appeal. I'm in my 20s and I enjoy visiting for the general ambiance, historical sites, food, etc. But I know it's equally popular with retirees.
From what I gather from visiting a few times, Portsmouth is very popular with whites in their 20's-40's and with young retirees. Seemed a relatively young town overall.
Portsmouth (easier to say than Pissquataquamouth) is a wonderful place to visit on a hot summer day. The sea breeze takes the edge of the heat and there is plenty to see and do.
PROS:
Portsmouth is a year-round city. Locals all year, Lots of tourists in spring, summer, fall.
Surrounding NH towns are some of the most expensive residential areas in NH
Close proximity to Mass boarder brings lots of Mass residents up on weekends.
Close proximity to Kittery brings in the Outlet shoopers
It has a waterfront (small, but it's there)
Upscale for NH, in terms of restaurants and shops (could handle more)
Demographic is good in terms of people willing to spend
It's Safe
It's Walkable
It's Historic (meaning things to see and do beyond eating and shopping)
Why it's better than other cities and smaller towns in NH...
Manchester - Dead on weekends. No tourism to speak of. Limited, small downtown area with nothing really going on.
Concord - Small downtown. Limited shopping and restaurants. Limited tourism. Nicer than Manchester, but businesses mainly focused on locals.
Nashua - Not as quaint as Concord, but the downtown is otherwise similar in terms that it's a locals place. No tourism.
Places up North or on the Lake (N. Conway, Meredith, etc) Great for tourism, but these places are seasonal. North Conway is close to four season, but I think you'd need to have a business specifically designed at tourists - local population is small.
I'm fast-approaching retirement and love being in Portsmouth. Dognh has pretty much nailed it. Great place to be, lots of variety and things happening year-round, but not so saturated that it couldn't take another of anything.
I just wanted to add that Portsmouth is an all around great town! The bars and restaurants are great due to the fact that people of Portsmouth are very friendly.
