I live in Mercer. yes, Princeton is Mercer. We are in between the two cities. We get both Philly and NY TV and Radio.
In my neighborhood, a large number of people commute to NYC. That is common in Mercer County.
Many people who live here used to live more north of here, which is why I think the newer people in Mercer are more NYers. Those who grew up in Mercer County for generations seems to relate to Philly more.
It is split evenly I would say!
When it comes to commuting to the metros in question, the same axiom holds true for Burlington County, which is south of Mercer. I lived there for 4 years. In the morning, the roads were way more filled with cars heading north (towards NY area) than west (towards Philly) even though the ride to Philadelphia was obviously shorter. I think this fact speaks volumes to the difference in economies between the two major cities. NY offers much higher salaries, while the Burlington and Mercer (south Mercer, really) Counties offer lower housing costs. This all adds up to the areas being geographically closer to Philly, but increasingly economically tied into NY. Another good barometer is newspaper circulation. When I first moved to Burlington County in 2001, you could not go into a WaWa and buy a New York Post newspaper. When I moved in 2005, you could.
It would appear then that the pull of NYC has less to do with the orientation of the people who live there and more to do with the sheer number of jobs available as Mercer Co. residents are most likely to work in Mercer or in a neighboring county.
I consider it both, but if you have to choose one over the other it would be Philly. More of us Mercerians work in NYC than in Philly, but more of us are from the Philly area than from NYC. I think the Philly teams (Phillies and Flyers especially) have more fans here than the NYC teams, with the exception of the Giants.
