I came across this forum while searching for some information. I would be moving to a new job in New Jersey sometime in Feb, and would be working in Franklin Lakes. I am looking for a recommendation for a good city nearby, preferably within 5-10 miles of work and with a good school system (for 5 year old son to start school). Additionally, if there's any Asian Indian community around, that would be good. I am looking to rent within $2k, preferably a 3 bedroom apartment, and looking for a quiet and safe locality.
Any information I can get would be extremely kind. Thank you in advance for your time!

Mahwah would be a good choice. Very good schools and it has rentals. Nice town. I don't know if you are Hindu, but there is also a Hindu temple right in Mahwah. Good luck.
You should consider Parsippany - Troy Hills- a large Asian Indian community and you can take 287 northeast to 208/Franklin lakes very easily. There are rentals in that area too.
Thanks @Ian! On the map Parsippany looks quite far - almost 30 miles commute one way, have never been to NJ so am judging that by my Chicago standards... maybe the commute is better than what I think!

Yes, for Franklin Lakes you can/should live closer.
I agree with Mahwah, but if you are looking for really great schools you might try in Franklin Lakes. A rental for 2000 might be hard to come by, but get a realtor to help. Also Oakland and Wyckoff are good choices too with great schools.
I would also look at Ridgewood, Glen Rock & Hawthorne. All close to FL and easily accesible to Route 208. Your money will go further in Hawthorne.
Take Ridgewood (or substitute Glen Rock). Add Hawthorne. Divide by 2. You get Fair Lawn. Good schools and quite a few apartment complexes/houses for rent in the town. Not cheap, but not crazy expensive by Bergen County standards. You should be able to get a 3BR for $2000 with a little work.
