I work all around North and Central NJ. My wife works in downtown NYC. I want to buy a house in a safe neighborhood with appreciation potential and a mostly caucasian demographic.

I live in So Orange right now and it seems like $600,000 is the starting price around here for anything nice. Every once and awhile I find something decent in Livingston, Caldwell, Millburn or Cedar Grove.

I recently got interested in East Brunswick and Dunellen but Im very unfamiliar with these towns. I dont know what the commute to NYC is like and how the market is in Middlesex compared to Essex.

Any thoughts? Are there other towns that someone can recommend?

Can you narrow your range a little bit in terms of price? Low, mid, or high 300's? Are you looking for a single family, condo, or townhome? That info. will help people give you better ideas.

In general, North Jersey is more expensive than Central Jersey.

East Brunswick is a great town--great schools and fairly affluent.

Have you checked out Iselin? It is in Central Jersey and the MetroPark train is a 30 min. commute to Penn Station (you can walk to the train from many parts of Iselin, and there is plenty of parking available at the station) Taxes and home prices are a lot lower than many other parts of NJ, and the neighborhoods are very safe and friendly. If you look on realtor.com, you'll see a lot of homes in the 300-400K price range

Edison, East Brunswick, South River, Dunellen, & Piscataway are all choices you may have. Again depends on your price range and what you are looking for but if you need schools, East Brunswick is top choice and then Edison and Piscataway in that order. If you need any further help with these towns, please do not hesitate to ask.

$300+k can buy a nice ranch at Piscataway with good size property, and many people living at Piscataway working at NYC take Dunellen Train Station which has been renovated, nice, $50 a month parking fee. weekend free. If you are interested in Dunellen itself, the residence only $40 a month on parking.

The only thing is that Piscataway has 50% cocasian, 25% black and 25% Asian roughtly, very mixed. Dunellen may have more whites, and Greenbrook right next to it could be your another option and all use Dunellen Train Stn to NYC.

Hi. My husband works in NY and I work in both NY and NJ. We live in Iselin, NJ. It is a 30 minute commute to Penn Station (Metro Park train station) and we are less than a mile from the Garden State PKWY. The GSP exit is 131, so it is close to the Turnpike as well. We have found the location to be extremely conveniant. You can find a lot of homes for under $400K... many like ours are walking distance to the train.Just look on realtor.com or on the Garden State MLS (under Woodbridge...Iselin is a section of Woodbridge).

When we were looking we also checked out Cranford and Westfield. They are really nice towns and convenient for Jersey, but the commute to the city was rough (about an hour and you have to switch trains... friends who lived there said that it was difficult, especially when there were delays.
