Sorry but Jersey City is the residence for bankers working in Manhattan that can't afford to live in Manhattan yet. Newark is different.

Union City - 1.27 mi. / pop. 66,455
West New York - 2.6 mi. / pop. 49,708
Guttenberg - .19 mi. / pop. 11,176 (yes that's just .19 miles!)
Weehawken - .85 mi. / pop. 12,370
North Bergen - 5.19 mi. / pop. 55,270

Creating a city 26.25 mi. sq. and a population of 492,581

this "city" already exists, it just needs to be made official.
It's been tried before. Residents of most of the other cities took exception. Also you forgot Bayonne, 5.8 square miles, population 63024.

As for Jersey City and Newark, they don't even have a border; they meet at a point, and that point is in Newark Bay.

No

but New Jersey should trade Hudson county for Staten Island with New York state. Then it would make more sense. Hudson county is a hell of a lot more like NYC both culturally and with its dense city-scape; it's essentially part of New York. Similarly, staten Island is a lot more like New Jersey (the actual New Jersey, which excludes Hudson county)

No. Both cities have enough of their own problems. Spare us the integration, please.

NJ and NY grew up together. Just because NY is laden with urbanity doesn't mean it HAS to be so, the same way NJ won't be ALL suburban-flavored. There are even parts of Queens that look like NJ. They can keep SI.

its clear some annexation needs to be done... newark doesnt have any stand out neighborhoods because there all called something else besides newark ( harrison, hillside) a town like irvington is hardly supporting itself and is essentially draining the county budget while its surrounded by newark/south orange/ and hillside.. I agree wholeheartedly with hudson county dissolving because in essence its all basically jersey city/ seacacus/ and towns that resemble newark... we as residents need to put pressure and start a petition to actually get the mergers to happen so that we can all reap the benefits ... divided we fall ...

ps pateron/passaic/clifton?

Yeah, and maybe the reason those neighborhoods aren't as bad is because they're not part of Newark.

but really, why would we do this? someone said above it would be better to separate some of the sub divisions, and thats right. combining two crime ridden cities, would just make the beast too hard to control. why JC and newark?? what about Irvington and Newark? at least they are next to each other. Something that large would be really difficult for police to patrol and control, and with the fantastic budget decisions our fancy pants governor is making, that place would be out of control.
most of jersey city isnt crime ridden ... the reason to combine towns is to save money when you crunch the numbers your looking at like 621848 people which would make Newark the 22 biggest city in america ( which it technically already is) bigger than Seattle and Denver just smaller than Boston. At 57 square miles covering the area, that would make it smaller than Baltimore, or Memphis or other like sized cities (except Boston) Newark would have the 2nd least amount of land mass on the top 25 biggest cities. Most of the towns have lower crime rates than Newark which would balance the crime right at the very moment the annexation happened.

Bostons Public Library operating budget is somewhere between 23-40 million dollars, " New" Newark should be around 21-30 million dollars which is around the same point. Current Newark spend 940 million while Boston 856 million Boston is known as one of the best urban school systems in the country yet Newark spends more than them, maybe annexing would help ( it would help simply by having " Suburban" students graduate and pass HSPA. Newark would be able to boast having 7 colleges 35798 college students. Newark's biggest problem is stigma and once people from those nice towns say im from Newark more people would be willing to visit Newark and people would be able to say i dont live in a bad neighborhood of Newark.

Of course if they did annex, Most of the city is still unconnected to the region which would need NJ transit to offer some other options for people to commute along the neighborhoods and to Downtown Newark. Some of the main Ave's in the city should benefit from Downtown Newark gaining jobs and having workings moving into various areas , some streets will be local shopping streets for those residents and some will be similar to broadway ( some parts upscale, some parts low rent) Newark should be able to swing a basketball team with that huge of a population( Denver , DC, Milwaukee, Portland are smaller) along with its Soccer team, Hockey team, and having the New York Giants and Jets in the suburbs of Newark. Its honestly something we should be looking into and asking how will it work ...

Newark spend 197 million on its police force and dc spends 490 million .

granted .. but the point of my statement was that those towns should be... because of density, commute patterns, proximity. in a place like vegas theres no urban areas outside the city. Upper East side isnt downgraded at all even though its about 4 miles from the south bronx
