Fox Chase specializes in cancer. I'd find a doctor affiliated with HUP or Jefferson. I'd ask that question on the Philly board. Good luck.
My brother was treated for years at Memorial Sloan Kettering. They have the expertise. I don't have an answer about the other places you mentioned.
I know someone who was operated on and then had to go to Memorial Sloan Kettering to have them fix the mistakes the other hospital made in the surgery.
I agree about Sloan-Kettering. People come from all over the world to go there. Please call your insurance company as well as having your local specialist (M.D.) to refer you there for "medical necessity" so that you don't get stuck with the excessive unnecessary $$$ balance. Keep in mind that it costs upfront to go to NYC for medical care, but it can be worth it in the long-term. Sloan-Kettering has incredible imaging machinery, top docs and a great nursing staff, too. Best wishes in your recovery.
Would it be better to find a really good doctor first and then the hospital?
This sounds logical, but no, not really. If you choose by doctor you are locked into hospitals (usually) that he or she has privileges in. These may or may not have state of the art equipment, a great staff, etc.
The best hospitals, usually teaching hospitals, attract the best doctors from the best schools.
I have heard that once you are under care of one institution, another will sometimes not treat you. The initial decision you make regarding who you want for your health care (at least for cancer treatment) is often the one you are stuck with.
I would not think that I could go to someplace local for cancer treatment and if I did not like them I could easily transfer to someplace like Sloan.
I always, for any treatment, choose the hospital first and then go down their list of affiliated doctors.
I know your tumor is benign, but if anyone does have cancer, Anderson (in Texas) and Sloan are the best.
