Just moved to North East Bergen County this past winter for a job. I am required to remain in the state to continue my employment. My husband works an hour and 15 minutes away in Westchester County. Should we stay here and purchase a $400,000 home that is on a tenth of an acre, needs work, potential flood zone, or move up north to Putnam where we can get a half acre plus, decent home, less crowded? School systems are comparable... I know because I have worked in both.
Family is here... my job is here. However, he is exhausted from commuting. We want to start a family soon and don't know what the right decision is...
Taxes are also more here (average 13000) up there (10000)
Salary is 80 for him, if I keep my job, we total 130.
Where is the American Dream? Will we ever see a return on what we buy? (Example: parents house worth 5 times what they purchased for 30 years ago)
Whatever we decide, needs to be smart... any advice is helpful.

You laid out the pros & cons pretty well. An hour north of Bergen isn't really that far to see family. I personally liked the hustle & bustle of Bergen Co. and was not a big fan of upstate NY...BOOOOR-ING! But if it fits you better then go for it. Long commutes are draining and reduce the quality of life.

As far as housing going up, nobody really knows that anymore. If you buy in a good town with good schools, you'll see appreciation. It's never going to be like it was from 2000-2005 unfortunately.

Was TX an option? There's only a few places I WOULDN'T want to live in and that's one. Hot & full of Texans.

I'm always mesmerized by these sorts of questions.
As a fully actualized human being & a grownup; I know who I am & where I fit in. Putnam, Bergen or Texas..................

You tell me.

If you have nothing nice to say, then please don't offer advice. This is directed towards "openheads". It is not easy to figure out where you are going to settle for the next ten years when you waited 8 years to get a full-time job... have student loans to worry about, and want to raise your future family in the best place available. I am a human being and your comment was hurtful. I feel as if I could fit in either places. I grew up in Rockland County.
I was just asking for advice from those who have been in the same situation.

EBWick, I appreciate your feedback. You made good observations and TX was just a joke. Thank you
