South Orange and Maplewood are both pretty safe, and have their share of rentals available (probably more in South Orange). I know there are a bunch of apartments near the train station in South Orange, and that's not far from SHU. There is at least one quiet condo development with 1/2/3 bedroom condos in Maplewood called "Maplewood Village" condos, near the Maplewood public pool and about 3 miles from Seton Hall. There are often places for rent in that development.

Look on Maplewoodonline.com sometimes they list by owner rentals there in both Maplewood and South Orange.

Maplewood. South Orange is ok too, but the proximity to East Orange of some parts should make you wary.
