I am torn about whether or not to leave New Jersey. Right now it's where I am, and I did have plans to move pretty far away, but those plans ended with the death of my fiance earlier this year.
I'm feeling right now like one of those horror movies where the people are walking for hours only to find themselves back in the place where they started. Part-time work (which is mostly in the city) has been most helpful, but I am officially retired and won't be doing that forever.
The traffic in Monmouth county is from hell. It's gotten exponentially worse since I moved there from Bergen County in 2010, and it's so frustrating to have to crawl along and sit at five red lights just to go to the post office or something. Luckily, only one light to get to the supermarket three minutes away. It is only going to get worse when Netflix builds their studio.
Occasionally I do think about staying in New Jersey, but moving to where it's a little less crowded. Closer to the Delaware River, maybe.

One sister in Chatham, one in Edison, one in Rumson and my Brother and Sister live in Wall. I fully understand how you feel about the traffic while I have learned to use a few different ways to get around sometimes it's fruitless.
Just do what makes you happy, NJ is a great place still, yeah it has it's problems but everyplace does, everyplace. Go where you will be the happiest.
As Thomas a Kempis wrote, back in the 1400s, "Wherever you go, there you are".
Or, to put it in more modern terminology, a person who is unhappy with himself--and with his personal choices in life--is not likely to find happiness, no matter where he chooses to go.
As I have mentioned to you on several occasions, the "Geographical Cure" is rarely successful, and despite your brief foray into the US Midwest for a new career, you are now back here, in NJ. I strongly suggest that you focus on improving your lot in life, and that you not get distracted by your specific location at any given time, as your locale has much less to do with achieving personal success than your own credentials, your own skills, and your own achievements.
I don't commute anymore and love the Jersey Shore for 5 months a year. I swim in my backyard and boat over to Island Beach State Park in 10 minutes. With that said, we're getting ready to head to Florida for the winter. After 60 plus years here, with lots of family and friends in NJ, it's hard to just pack up and leave. So to us we are enjoying the best of both states.
