My husband grew up in NJ, 30 miles from Manhattan and I was shocked when he told me he'd never been to Coney Island. Is it not "a thing" for locals?
I had equated it to not going to Disneyland when you live nearby, although I realize they are not quite the same, but still. I grew up near Disneyland and we went a few times a year. Sure, they are both overrun by tourists, but worth visiting.
It's a thing for NYC locals. It's not a thing most New Jerseyans will cross two rivers for.
I've been many times, but I'm a lot closer than 30 miles from it. From Jersey City it's pretty easy to take PATH and then bike or subway there. But suburban people are going to drive to the beach and NJ beaches are much easier for them to drive to.

How about you locals?
I grew up in NJ, 30 miles from Manhattan, have lived most of my 65 years in NJ, worked in NYC most of my life, and I've never been to Coney Island, either.
Why would I? What is there that the Jersey Shore does not have?
As someone pointed out, it would be a huge pain in the ass to get there. For what?
By the way, I just got back from walking the mile-long boardwalk at the beach in Long Branch. Took me 15 minutes to get there.
I lived two blocks from the Long Branch boardwalk in 1975-76. Used to fish for whiting and ling off the pier in the dead of winter. Pinball machines, pizza, down the street from the Windmill and Inkwell (closed last year)
It's only recently begun to open up as an attraction.
For many years, it was 'the hood'.
It's arc has been similar to Asbury. When I lived in NYC, there was ZERO reason to go there except for July 4th. But I somehow ended up there a few times anyway.
There's nude beaches now in NYC and I find that FAR more interesting.
I've lived in New Jersey most of my life, and went to Coney Island for the first time 2 weeks ago for an event at the stadium there. Actually didn't even see the boardwalk or beach when we went. No desire to willingly go back.
