In a more perfect and just world by now a way to run NJT transit trains through NYP out to LI and vice versa would have been done by now.
If you look to Europe, Asia and some other countries and their "ring" network of commuter or whatever rail transit systems LI, NYC and NJ easily fall within doable range.
When you consider what is now called NJT trains and LIRR were once all part of the great PRR, one does wonder.
