I agree openheads. Although Middlesex county isn't all that bad. I lived there for 4 years. I grew up in Bergen County though.

I have to say the aboslute worst and most boring place i've ever lived in Jersey was Hunterdon County. No offense Petun. I lived in High Bridge for 3 years and it felt like an eternity. So I left to go to college at Montclair State and lived in Essex off campus. I was sooo happy to do so.

But this is the great thing about Jersey. The state is small, but offers something for everyone. It depends on what your preference is. If you love open space and farms, there's a place to live in Jersey. If you love the shore, here's a home for you. If you like city life, there's a place to embrace that. It's really amazing how different Jersey is if you drive even an hour from where you are.

Best..Hunterdon..it is expensive in many areas, but you can find some good real estate buys in some areas these days, especially the farther west you go. The quality of life can't be beat. It is rural/suburban, yet only an hour (or less) train ride to NYC.

I'd like to check out Lambertville in Hunterdon, it is like an extension of New Hope, PA.

Nearly all my recreational activities take place at the beach; surfing, diving, etc so I cannot imagine any place beside Monmouth co but to be perfectly honest I have never lived in the Northern counties so maybe they are great.

Lived mostly in northwest Bergen (and a few years in Passaic Co.) most of my life. I never thought I'd leave Bergen County. I was fifth generation in my hometown and related to half the people there, lol.

I saw it change from a pretty, semi-rural place to an overcrowded, overbuilt town. It's still a nice town, don't get me wrong--I raised my daughter there, but it lost that blue-collar, small-town feel and turned into Ridgewood Lite. Now you can't make a left turn without sitting for five minutes.

I moved to Monmouth County after my daughter graduated. I have a couple of friends down this way and that's how I learned about the area, and found it was affordable to me, where Bergen County was not. The drawback is the killer commute to the city, but I am dealing with that.

I like the proximity to the ocean, and only in the past few months found out what great county parks this area has. Still feels kind of weird not having any family in the area anymore, but my sister is one of those genealogy addicts, and she found that my great-grandfather's half-sister married someone from the Long Branch area and they had a son who was prominent in the community...and she's giving me the family names and they are all street names around where I live. So maybe I do have family members around here, albeit distant ones!

LOL Thats ok everyone has their own preference. I was laughing because I was reading your post and said to myself "Hey that is my name Petun" not realizing that it was a reply to my post! (I never check what I post I just put my two cents in) anyway the reason why I like Hunterdon is because it is quiet and I guess I am at the age where I prefer the quiet now as opposed to when I was younger I liked more urban life. Living in Staten Island for a long time makes me yearn for the country. Born in Brooklyn but grew up in Sussex County (talk about culture shock) I think back now that those folks probably thought we were part of the Mafia! That was 1967 WoW! Just miss the country now but I probably would get bored if I were to stay there indefinitely. I am partial to Northern NJ so I like Morris county and Essex county as well. Let's face it there are so many nice towns in NJ too bad it's so expensive!
Hopefully we will meet again.
Ciao

Plus, it's close to everything - right next to the shore and not far from NYC and Philly. I also like how, although there are a lot of people living there, it still manages to have a lot of open space and maintain a "rural suburb" character. I live in Middlesex County now, and although I love the town I'm in (Metuchen) and I think the county is nice as a whole, it's becoming more and more crowded each year.

The worst county? I've never been a fan of Cumberland County...just isn't much there.
except 553 bus which is 24/7

The beauty and open spaces, real farms, scenery, and access to quite a few big cities make Salem County my #1.

Cape May County second.

North Jersey counties - packed with multi-lane roads and too many people - all come in last for me.
